Grandpa 'Far Away's' Birthday Party

At the end of May, we went to visit Grandma 'Chili' and Grandpa 'Far Away' for Grandpa's birthday up at their new home in WI.

The drive itself was an adventure since we left on a Friday and we both had to work that day so we couldn't even leave until around 5pm.  Travelling over dinner time and bed time can get interesting.  Kids can get squirrely...and now we aren't just dealing with one or two squirrely kids...we are dealing with THREE.  So, it definitely makes for interesting car trips.  It was good practice though, and by the time we took our second car trip in July I think we had worked out most of the kinks.

It was a great trip overall.  The boys enjoyed seeing their grandparents...even though we aren't that far apart, life makes it difficult to schedule visits so when we do get together it is the biggest treat in the world for the boys.  They really do love their grandparents and love spending one-on-one time with them.  Grandma and Grandpa were also amazed at how much Ben had grown and how much personality he had gotten since December!

6 years - Max!

How is it possible that this little boy has turned the ripe old age of 6?!?

It seems like just yesterday that we had our first whirlwind delivery, and now he's well past the stage of infant, of baby, of toddler and full fledged into little KID.  And while so much of the baby is gone, there is still some that remains...

But today, I want to remember everything about this child, where he is at 6.  It seems so old and yet still so young at the same time.

How he still sleeps with his trusty blue blankie, tucking it in with him at night and carrying it around the house with him.  He's worn a big hole right around the small tag on the side of it that he likes to rub his thumb over right before he falls asleep.

How he asks for...no, insists...that he get a hug AND kiss each night.

His eagerness to learn, to build, to compute, to understand.

His light blue eyes, sandy brown hair, perfectly olived skin and now his gapped, one-tooth-missing smile.

His slight stutter when he gets excited about explaining something...

His random exclamations of "I Love you Mom (or Dad) when emotion washes over him (like after he gets something he wants or he's happy).

The way his face lights up when I go to pick him up from school and how he races across the lot towards me and barrels into me, embracing my legs/waist in a HUGE bear hug - almost knocking me over.

His eagerness to please that he hides under the false pretense of 'knowing everything'

His love for his brothers and his irritation with them (mostly Sam) at the same time.  Still, he would move heaven and earth for them, and he gets visibly upset when they are upset.

His stubbornness.

His bossiness.

His kind and gentle heart.

His love for God and Jesus.

His passion for outerspace, rocket ships, Star Wars and Angry Birds (he's already got some pretty good planet trivia under his belt).

His ability to go from happy to sad back to happy again, and the intensity with which he insists he is feeling.

The adoration he shows his dad (veiled of course) and how proud he is of the things his daddy does.

The fact that he insists on cleaning out his toe lint.

His love for being goofy/silly/the center of attention.

His obsession with treats and anything sweet.

His love for the iPad.

His love for playing house or school or other role-playing games.

He sleeps from 7:30-6:30 most days and if asked to, will even take up to a 2 hr nap.

The way he hums the ABCS when he brushes his teeth each night.

His infamous 3 second long hand washing.

That he stills wants to and ASKS to hold my hand.

His hesitation to try something new until he is able to mentally process it and overcome his fear/anxiety of failure.

The ease with which he makes friends - when I pick him up from school he's got kids from every grade saying hi to him and his response is to be cool and mutter "Hey".  It makes me laugh.

The fact that he calls his 'best friend' at school his 'best Dude'.

This child...the same one that tested us continuously when he was younger has been turning into the most amazing kid (not that he still doesn't test us from time to time).  There has been a remarkable change in him over the past few months (maybe it was just the dreaded half birthday syndrome we seem to witness here), so much so that big Max and I have commented on it to each other repeatedly, and other people in our lives have noticed it as well.

I think big Max said it best in what he wrote in Max's birthday card  "Happy 6th birthday, Buddy! You are becoming such a great kid!  Can't wait to see what the next year will bring."

Thirty Days of Thankfulness: Day 18

I am sitting here trying to actually believe that I have a FIVE year old under my roof.  Whaa?  When the heck did that happen????

So much has happened in the past five years -- and yet it feels like it is not possible that five years have passed since that eventful 2.5 hrs of my life...

And now we have a little boy who is turning 5 going on 15.  He loves outerspace and rocket ships -- he knows all the planets by name and wants to be an astronaut when he grows up.

He's starting to read sight words well and I am finding him with his nose in a book more and more lately.  He also loves doing math ('plusing' as he calls it) and he likes it when I make the equations really difficult -- more than 2 numbers at a time and really big numbers.

He's been very polite as of late and I am hearing tons of pleases and thank yous and lots of  'Yes Mom' which really makes me happy!

We had our first Parent/Teacher conference last night and it was a good confirmation of what we know already about this stellar little man.  He is well-advanced academically (needs to be challenged more), plays well with other kids, needs to be constantly moving, and needs to work a little better on his listening (especially when he gets excited).  He was one of the few kids in his class that could not only identify and write all his letters, but also make the appropriate noises/sounds that they make.  He can draw all his shapes really well -- has a great differentiation between his squares and rectangles even.  We couldn't be prouder of our little man -- and it is a reminder to us that we can continue to work with him and challenge him at home (only while it's fun though, of course).

I can't believe he is 5.  This morning when he put on some of his new 5T clothes I said to him "Oh Max!  You are getting so big! I can't believe you are wearing size 5 clothes already!  I am so sad!!"  And he responded "Don't worry Mom, even though I am getting bigger, I will always love you and hug you and kiss you.  I'll always be your baby."

You are right little man, you are right.  And you are wise beyond your years already.  LOVE YOU.

Sam's Second Birthday -- Friends and Family party

At the end of Sam's birthday week we invited a few of our most favorite people and friends over to celebrate with singing and cake.  We are so blessed to have such wonderful and caring (and fun) people in our life (who actually WANT to hang out with us, LOL).

Auntie Amanda and Uncle Steve and Auntie Laura, Uncle Mike and Nina came.  Sam was in love with the bubblers and toys that Nina brought him, and once again, Amanda's book gift was the hit of the century -- I don't know how she always picks out the BEST books, but you can bet that every night when we read books before bed, at least ONE of the books we read is one SHE picked out.  What can we say, she picked a good profession for herself (teacher).

We lit up the little birthday cake with a bunch of candles and treated Sam to a full on rendition of the Happy Birthday Song.  And this sweet little boy sang along the entire time :)

Then it was time to blow out candles...

And he blew them ALL OUT BY HIMSELF!!  Way to go Sammy!!!

Little Max (gosh he's not so little anymore is he...) was in heaven getting to spend time with his favorite Auntie and godmother (aka godmudda).  I think she was in heaven too....

I have to include a picture of this little cutie in closing.  Isn't Nina Bean the cutest??  Love her!!

It was a wonderful night -- the kids played together well and we had a delicious meal --  grilled chicken, broccoli salad, green salad, fruit salad and cake.  Oh yeah...and wine....lots of wine.  :)  Let's do it again soon, friends!
